When we look at precision machining industry, we can always see the word, CNC milling. So what is CNC milling?

CNC Milling (or computer numerical control milling) and milling both are frequently used methods in precision machining. Milling is the process of using rotating cutter to remove unwanted material from a workpiece to make it become the required shape and size of customers.

CNC milling is about the same as milling, the difference between them is that the process of CNC milling is operated and managed by the computer, to be more specific, a programmable code that has done by the programmer. On the other hand, milling, is a process that involves a technician to operate the milling machine.

CNC milling can be break into 4 steps :
 
  • Design a CAD model
  • Convert the model into CNC program
  • Set up the machine
  • Start operation
The CNC milling process starts with creating a 2D or 3D model of the part, then export the model to a CNC-compatible file format and after exporting the model, convert it into CNC program using CAM software. Once these steps have been completed, the machine is ready to operate. Just one last thing, the operator will need to place the workpiece before the operation, then you are all set.

CNC milling has a large range of suitable materials, such as metal, plastic, glass and so on. Also, selecting the right cutter is very important for CNC milling, as cutter has huge impact on production process.
